Having a breast reduction surgery is a serious decision for a woman to make. Although most surgeries are done with little to no side effects or complications, things can happen. However, many of the risks can be minimized if one takes the proper steps to avoid complications from breast reduction surgery.

Step1
Plan properly. Prior to your surgery, make sure you take the time to plan for your pre and post surgical needs. Make sure you eat properly, prepare your home and line up transportation.
Step2
Know what is normal. Having breast pain and feeling tired are normal symptoms everyone experiences after breast reduction surgery. You will experience some swelling and bleeding for a few days after the surgery. Be sure you understand the difference between these side effects and serious complications that require immediate attention.
Step3
Know the serious complications. Although you will experience some pain, it should not be severe. Watch for signs of infection such as a foul odor, intense swelling, pain and leakage from the incision. If you notice any of these symptoms you should call your doctor immediately.
Step4
Avoid smoking and smoke –filled areas. Smoking is the leading cause of post-surgery complications. Smoke can irritate the incision site and lead to infection and prolong the healing process.
Step5
Use common sense when recovering. Follow the doctor’s instructions completely. The doctor will tell you to avoid strenuous activities and driving until you no longer feel pain.
Step6
Follow through with post-surgery care. After the surgery, make sure you follow your surgeon’s instructions for post-surgical care and follow-up. Take at least one week off of school or work and refrain from doing any significant physical activity, especially heavy lifting.
Step7
Take your prescriptions. Your doctor will prescribe you antibiotic ointments and oral painkillers. Be sure to take these as instructed to minimize infection and other complications.
